Adding a DMARC Record to a Third-Party Domain
Major email services, including Gmail and Yahoo, mandate that domain owners configure a DMARC record to enable sending emails from a custom branded address.
Consult the following external guides to learn how to check and implement a DMARC record on your domain:
Step-by-Step Setup Procedure
The steps outlined below describe the standard process for managing your DMARC entry. Shopify applies v=DMARC1; p=none; as its baseline DMARC record. However, third-party systems or external services may require alternative DMARC parameters, which will necessitate adjusting your default Shopify entry.
For instance, if you intend to enable verified corporate email delivery for Microsoft Outlook desktop users via a dedicated organization portal, refer to Microsoft's official user guide on email domain verification.
To register the record, proceed as follows:
-
Sign in to the administrative panel of your domain registrar.
-
Navigate to the DNS zone management section.
-
Create a new TXT record dedicated to DMARC. In the Record Name / DNS Host field, enter
_dmarc. Note that certain domain hosts automatically append your root domain, creating a record name such as_dmarc.my-brand.store. After saving the entry, verify that the host name syntax is correct. -
In the Text Record Value field, enter
v=DMARC1; p=none;.
Critical Configuration Guidelines
A domain must maintain only one active DMARC record. Creating multiple DMARC TXT entries will result in validation failures, causing your outbound sender address to be rewritten into a generic system format like store+555@shopifyemail.com. If a DMARC record already exists, edit the existing entry rather than adding a new one.
If your active DMARC record contains strict alignment tags like adkim=s or aspf=s, we recommend removing these settings or updating them to relaxed mode (adkim=r and aspf=r) for optimal email deliverability with Shopify. You can inspect your updated DMARC record using free online lookup tools. For further clarification regarding p=none, review the DMARC record entry in the Shopify glossary.
