Meta Is Now Available as an AI Channel in Shopify: What It Means for Stores
Learn how Meta sales work with Shopify, from direct checkout to requirements and channel management.
The Meta sales channel allows customers to purchase products without leaving the Meta experience where they discovered them. Orders can be completed through a direct checkout powered by Shopify, so the customer does not have to visit the merchant's online store to finish the purchase.
For eligible stores, Meta direct checkout is enabled by default. Merchants can disable it if they prefer customers to complete their purchases on the online store instead. Products are made discoverable across Meta through Shopify Catalog.
Requirements for selling on Meta
A store must meet several requirements to use Meta direct checkout.
-
Sell to customers in the United States.
-
Have products that meet the requirements for Shopify Catalog.
-
Use the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel with product syncing enabled in the Product feed section when products need to be discoverable and purchasable through shoppable ads.
-
Read and accept the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
-
Have the store's Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy completed in Shopify Admin.
Considerations for selling on Meta
Product discovery through this channel is powered by Shopify Catalog. Because of this, product information and store policies, including return and refund terms, need to remain accurate and up to date. The information shown to customers on Meta should match the information available in the online store.
When a store becomes eligible, Meta direct checkout is automatically enabled in Shopify Admin. The setting needs to remain active for customers to purchase products directly through Meta.
If direct checkout is disabled, products can still be discovered on Meta surfaces. However, customers are redirected to the online store when they want to complete a purchase.
Meta direct checkout is available only to customers located in the United States.
Some Shopify functionality is not available when an order is completed directly through Meta. These limitations apply to certain checkout features and product types. Shopify Functions, including functions related to shipping, discounts, and cart and checkout validation, are supported. Automatic discounts and discount codes created in Shopify are also supported.
Any legally required disclosures included in a product description should appear within the first 6,000 characters.
There are no additional fees for selling through Meta direct checkout. Merchants pay only their regular payment processing fees.
Features not supported by Meta direct checkout
Not every Shopify feature is available when customers complete their purchases directly on Meta.
Checkout blocks
Checkout blocks are not supported. As a result, the checkout experience displayed on Meta may look different from the checkout customers see on the online store.
Accelerated checkout
Meta supports only a subset of the accelerated checkout options that are enabled for the store.
Unsupported product types
The following product types cannot be sold through Meta direct checkout:
-
Subscriptions.
-
Product bundles.
-
Customizable products.
-
B2B-only products.
Analytics and pixels
Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire during a direct checkout completed on Meta. This checkout supports only server-to-server pixels for checkout-started and checkout-completed events. Standard and custom client-side pixels do not fire.
Delivery methods
Local delivery, pickup in store, and pickup points are not supported as delivery methods in Meta direct checkout.
Required customer login
You cannot require customers to sign in to their account before they begin checkout.
Managing the Meta channel
Meta participation is managed from Sales channels → Agentic in Shopify Admin.
No additional action is required for products to become discoverable through Meta via Shopify Catalog. Product discovery is handled through Shopify Catalog.
Once the store is eligible, Meta direct checkout is enabled automatically. It needs to remain active if customers are expected to purchase products directly through Meta.
Opting in or out of selling on Meta
Access to Shopify Catalog for Meta can be disabled. However, this does not necessarily prevent products from appearing on Meta through other external discovery methods, such as web crawling and indexing.
If a product needs to be completely hidden from AI channels, a separate setting for preventing AI-channel product discovery should be used.
Note
Removing Meta's access to Shopify Catalog does not affect whether products are displayed through Shopify Catalog on other platforms, including Shop.
Steps
-
In Shopify Admin, go to Sales channels → Agentic.
-
Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
-
Select Meta.
-
Turn Shopify Catalog access on or off.
-
Click Save.
Opting in or out of Meta direct checkout
Meta direct checkout is enabled by default for eligible stores, allowing customers to purchase products directly on Meta surfaces.
Merchants can change this setting depending on where they want customers to complete their purchases. When direct checkout is disabled, products can still be discovered through Shopify Catalog on Meta, but customers cannot complete the purchase directly there.
Steps
-
In Shopify Admin, go to Sales channels → Agentic.
-
Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
-
Select Meta.
-
Turn Direct checkout on or off.
-
Click Save.
How customers complete their orders
When Meta direct checkout is enabled, customers can start and complete a purchase directly within the Meta experience without leaving the platform.
If a checkout requires information that cannot be collected on Meta, the customer is redirected to the online store checkout. The store opens inside Meta's in-app browser, while the customer's cart remains intact.
When direct checkout is disabled, customers can still discover products through Meta. To purchase, however, they are redirected to the online store, where they can add the product to their cart and complete the order.
Orders and attribution
Orders completed directly on Meta are attributed to the Meta channel and appear in Shopify Admin in the same way as orders from other sales channels.
The merchant remains the merchant of record and continues to handle fulfillment, returns, and customer service for these orders.
Note
Third-party analytics pixels used for marketing attribution do not fire when a direct checkout is completed on Meta. This happens because the checkout takes place outside the online store.
The same limitation applies to other direct checkout scenarios where the order is completed outside the merchant's online store.
