How to Buy and Connect a Domain in Shopify: Step-by-Step Guide
A custom domain is an essential part of a professional online store. It increases customer trust, strengthens brand recognition, and makes your website address more convenient and memorable.
In Shopify, you can purchase a domain directly from the admin panel and connect it to your store immediately.
1. Purchasing a Domain in Shopify
Go to your Shopify admin panel: Settings → Domains. Click Buy new domain and enter your desired domain name. After selecting an available option, click Buy and complete the payment.
2. Connecting a Domain
2.1. Domain Purchased via Shopify
If the domain was purchased directly through Shopify (see section 1), it is connected to the store automatically.
No additional DNS configuration is required — Shopify sets up all necessary parameters on its own.
2.2. Domain from a Third-Party Registrar
If the domain was purchased from a third-party registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.), it must be connected manually via DNS settings.
To do this, add the following records:
After making the changes, return to Shopify: Settings → Domains → Connect existing domain. Enter your domain and click Verify connection.
3. Domain Activation and SSL Certificate
After purchase, the domain usually becomes active within a few minutes. In rare cases, the process may take up to 24–48 hours. Shopify automatically provides a free SSL certificate, so your website will be available via the secure protocol https://.
After purchase, you need to verify the email address provided during domain registration. Check your inbox — Shopify will send emails with instructions.
If the email is not verified within 15 days, the domain registration may be suspended.
If the domain was previously purchased via Shopify and registered with the same details (first name, last name, and email), verification may occur automatically — in this case, you may not receive an email.
4. Setting the Domain as Primary
After connecting the domain, go to: Settings → Domains. Select the required domain and click Set as primary domain. It will then be used as the main address of your store.
Done — your store is now running on a custom professional domain.
