How to Set Up Shopify Payments: Step-by-Step Guide

Shopify Payments is a native payment solution built into the Shopify ecosystem. It allows merchants in supported countries to accept payments by bank cards directly, without the need to connect third-party payment gateways.

Below is a step-by-step setup and launch guide.

Step 1. Go to payment settings

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin panel
  2. In the bottom-left corner, click Settings
  3. In the menu that opens, select the Payments section

Step 2. Start activation

In the Shopify Payments block, click the Complete setup button

Important: If the button is unavailable or you do not see it, make sure that the store country specified in the settings (Settings → Store details) is officially supported by the payment system. You can check the list of supported countries in the regional guide.

Step 3. Fill in business details

Provide the legal information about your company:

  1. Business type — Legal entity type (Sole proprietor, LLC, LTD, etc.)
  2. Business details — Registration number, tax ID (EIN/VAT), legal address
  3. Personal details — Information about the business owner or authorized representative
  4. Add banking information for payouts — the format depends on the country (IBAN, routing number, or local banking details).
  5. After completing the form, click Save — the data will be submitted for automatic verification.

Step 4. Testing and launch

Verification usually takes from a few hours up to 2 business days. During this period, it is not recommended to modify or delete the submitted data. After successful verification, the account will receive the Active status.

Recommendation: Before launching traffic, enable Test mode in the Shopify Payments settings or use the Bogus Gateway test provider. This allows you to run several test purchases and ensure that the cart and checkout are working correctly.
