Adding CNAME Records to a Third-Party Domain

Important

Before you begin, make sure that your store is on an active paid Shopify plan. CNAME records can't be added for development stores or stores on the Pause and Build plan.

To help improve email deliverability, you need to add CNAME records to the domain used by your sender email address. These records connect your domain to Shopify's SPF and DKIM records and are used to authenticate your sender domain.

For example, if your sender email address is hello@myfashionstore.com, you need to add the CNAME records to the myfashionstore.com domain. You don't need to add any IP addresses to your DNS settings — the CNAME records are sufficient for authentication.

To complete the setup, you'll need your login credentials for the third-party domain provider associated with your sender email, as well as the email address you use to communicate with your customers.

Adding CNAME Records

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to SettingsNotifications.
  2. In the Sender email section, enter your email address and click Email domain authentication.
  3. Shopify will display the required CNAME records. Add all of the records shown in the setup window to your domain provider's DNS settings. Make sure to add every record provided by Shopify.

After you make the changes, DNS updates can take up to 48 hours to take effect. If domain verification fails, check that the CNAME record values in your domain provider's DNS settings exactly match those provided in your Shopify admin.

If you need help adding CNAME records, contact the support team of the registrar or domain provider that manages your domain.

What Happens If You Remove the CNAME Records

Removing the CNAME records added for email authentication can cause email deliverability issues, including bounced messages.

If the records are removed, Shopify Email will automatically replace your sender address with store+456@shopifyemail.com. This address meets the minimum authentication requirements and will be used until the required CNAME records are restored in your domain provider's DNS settings.

Once the records have been restored, they will be available again in your Shopify admin under SettingsNotifications.
